India's most modern and 1st greenfield airport was inaugurated at Shamshabad about 30 kilometres from Hyderabad by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Friday. The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport was developed under a public-private partnership initiative. Spread over 5,400 acres, this joint venture of GMR group has Malaysia airports holdings Berhad (11 per cent), Airports Authority of India (13 per cent) and Andhra Pradesh Government (13 per cen) holding stakes in the project.
The airport received emails on late Sunday night targeting British Airways' (BA 277) from Heathrow, Lufthansa's (LH 752) from Frankfurt and IndiGo's 6E 7178 from Kannur.
According to Hyderabad Airport GMR, British Airways flight 277 and Kuwait Airways flight 373 received the bomb threat. The BA 277 flight travelling from Heathrow to Hyderabad landed safely at 5:25 AM. Following the landing, standard safety protocols were initiated.

The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) here has got clearance from the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) to increase the user development fee (UDF) levied on all outbound passengers.
According to GHIAL chief executive officer P S Nair, the company is also introducing austerity measures to reduce cost of operations by 15-20 per cent besides exploring other sources of revenue. During the first six months of the current financial year, domestic traffic from the new airport has declined by 7.7 per cent to 2.49 million from 2.7 million in the corresponding period last year (from Begumpet airport).

International passengers departing from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad from April 23 onwards will have to pay Rs 1,000 ($25) towards user development fees (UDF). Announcing this in a statement, the new airport developer -- GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited -- said that the fees would be collected with the approval of the ministry of civil aviation.
The first commercial flight -- Lufthansa flight LH 752 from Frankfurt -- landed exactly at 0025 hours. About 250 passengers arrived by the 8-hour flight from Germany. The same aircraft was the first departure from RGIA at 0220 hours the same day.
Delhi's Indira Gandhi airport and Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji airport handle more than half of India's air traffic.
"The levy of UDF has become necessary in view of the huge investments made by the GMR-led consortium for creating the world class facilities for the passengers who use the greenfield airport," GMR HIAL Chief Commercial Officer Viswanath Attaluri said. The company has developed the first phase of the airport with an investment of Rs 2,478 crore (Rs 24.78 billion).
